Where we’re going, and why

I’ve tried to keep track of the most frequently heard expressions and questions I’ve heard since my wife and I announced last week that we’re moving to California this summer.

Words like surprised, happy, sad, and excited are common, but “shocked” is the response that I’ve most often heard. Then, there are the heartfelt inquieres.

The most popular is “What prompted this move?”, or some version of it, followed by the question of where we’re going to live in The Golden State.

So here’s the skinny…

My wife and I are moving to southern California; specifically, we’ll be living less than 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. We’re looking at living in Covina.

It’s a “small city” about half the size of Norman, Okla., and part of the urban sprawl known as Los Angeles County. Note the 2010 Census: LA County, pop. 9,818,605; Garvin County (where we currently live in Oklahoma), pop. 27,576. Almost 10 million vs. almost 27,000.

We’re moving to be closer to family and expose ourselves to different opportunities.

My wife is looking to be a Spanish teacher and I’m looking to work for a coffee company.

Without children at this point, and possible jobs and a network of people awaiting us on the West Coast, now seems like an ideal time to initiate change with a cross-country move.

We plan to have a moving sale sometime in late-June-early-July, and take what we can pack in a few vehicles with us. It’ll be almost like starting over for us.

Sounds exciting! California is lucky to have you two out there! Just can’t believe that you not only had your first cup of coffee without me but now you are wanting to work for a coffee company, lol?! I’m so proud for you Nick!!!

Haha! Must you remind me about that “first cup” of java again, Tim?

If the proposed coffee company job doesn’t pan out I’ve still got my mind on that food booth on the beach we discussed. ;)

Mark me down as “surprised” and “happy”. I was surprised to hear you guys were moving and happy that you will get a fresh start closer to family. Keep in touch. If we ever get out that way I will make a point to meet you for coffee.

Let me know if your schedule will change for this. I know it will be 2 hours earlier in LA.
